Dr. Reon Accepted into MPOG Outcomes Research Fellowship

March 21, 2024 by hma5jn@virginia.edu

University of Virginia Brian Reon, MD, PhD, Neuroanesthesia DivisionIn January 2024, Dr. Brian Reon officially began his MPOG Outcomes Research Fellowship that allows researchers to lead a project using MPOG database.

Dr. Reon’s fellowship research will focus on examining allogenic transfusion practices in multilevel spine surgeries and how the implementation of viscoelastic testing is associated with changes to those practices. Despite significant advances in minimally invasive surgical approaches, anti-fibrinolytic therapy and autologous blood salvage methodologies, allogenic blood product administration is still necessary in up to 30% of cases. His large retrospective cohort study aims to characterize allogenic transfusion administration in these multilevel spine surgeries and understand the impact of viscoelastic testing (ROTEM, TEG) on allogenic transfusion requirements and post-operative outcomes.
