bhoos: Safer Drinking for Students Mobile Application

bhoos is a native smartphone app targeting issues related to safe drinking for college students. It is composed of core educational content as well as a dynamic tool that allows you to track your drinking over time. bhoos was designed to be quick and easy to use. The more a user uses bhoos, the more they will benefit. The user can record their drinks in the app with a few taps and review their drinking history. In-app push notifications respond to the user’s drinking behavior to fit into the fabric of their lives. The user can review the in-app content that is most useful and ignore the rest. The app will soon be available on the Google Play and iTunes.

Terms and Conditions

You should not use any of these apps if you do not agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy. By using the bhoos app you agree to the terms and conditions provided below. The terms of use may change from time to time. We strongly recommend you review this page after every app update. This app is distributed by the Center for Behavioral Health and Technology at the University of Virginia (CBHT UVA) for research purposes. For Android phone users, this app is made available through the Google, Inc. (“Google”) Google Play store and is licensed, not sold, to you. For iPhone users, this app falls under 1) Apple’s standard software license for iOS apps- the App Store Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA).

The summary below highlights some of the key points of this EULA:

  1. App is licensed, not sold, to you. You get a non-transferable license to use the App on any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch that you own or control.
  2.  You may not redistribute the App (e.g. on a network, where it could be used by multiple users) or resell it.
  3. Do not copy, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, or try to access or modify the source code of the App. If you do, your license may be terminated, and you may be subject to prosecution and damages.
  4. CBHT UVA may change, suspend, remove, disable or limit access to any services offered by CBHT UVA at any time without notice, and without liability.
  5. App comes with NO WARRANTY; it is provided on “as is” and “as available” basis for research purposes. CBHT UVA is not liable for any losses or damages suffered by you, direct indirect or consequential, by your use of the App.

The bhoos app is provided as a service to help you monitor and learn skills for managing your drinking only, and is currently being evaluated in a research study. This Application does not constitute the practice of any medical, nursing or other professional health care advice, diagnosis or treatment.  The contents of the Application, such as text, graphics, images, data, graphs, audio, videos, computer programs and other material and information (collectively the “Content”), are for informational purposes only. THE CONTENT PROVIDED IN THIS APPLICATION IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE ADVICE OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL PHYSICIAN OR OTHER QUALIFIED HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. The bhoos app is complex software that may contain bugs. While we are doing our best, we cannot guarantee that our software will work faultlessly in all situations and circumstances.

Privacy Policy

As bhoos is distributed via the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store and runs on iOS, the use of bhoos is also subject to the Google Play and Apple Privacy Policy. Though the app is publicly available, you must provide informed consent in order to use this app. This app is being evaluated by CBHT UVA in a research study to determine its effectiveness.

Data Collection and Storage

All data within the app is stored in your device. We may also store or process your data on our servers that is housed in a secure Amazon cloud account. The bhoos app does not store any usernames and passwords you use to connect to any Third Parties – the username and password you provide to login is randomly generated. The bhoos app will not ask you to share information with Third Party services or applications (for example, when sharing on social media or with other apps on your phone). Immediately following installation, bhoos will begin collecting data as defined by the study. This includes but is not limited to self-reported information about your gender, weight, drinking, activity level, and sleep quality. You may quit a study and/or uninstall bhoos at any time.

Data Retention and Deletion

Data collected in studies run by the University of Virginia are retained according to the policies set forth during the consent process, which normally require retention for the duration of the study. If you are participating in a study you may email the study coordinator at any time to request deletion of your data. Contact information of the study team may be found in the bhoos app.

Updates and Changes

If CBHT UVA makes changes to its Terms and Conditions or Privacy Policy, these changes will be posted on the website in a timely manner. We reserve the right to modify this privacy policy at any time, so please review it frequently.
