Course Registration Tips
Roughly six weeks before the end of the current semester (see the Academic Calendar), consult with your faculty advisor(s) to determine the appropriate courses for the next semester. Be advised that the minimum required number of credits must be met each semester (fall and spring, years 1 and 2: 15; fall and spring, years 3+: 12 non-topical; every summer: 6 non-topical). NIH-sponsored training programs and other interdisciplinary groups may have additional course requirements. Failure to register by the deadline results in a registration block. Blocked registration at the beginning of the semester may result in a change of student status – negative consequences include complications with student loan repayment and/or visa status.
Most BIMS students are required to register for summer (6 credits, non-topical research). Failure to register for summer will result in higher taxes and may result in suspended access to recreation facilities, change in student status for international students, and similar consequences. Consult with a BIMS administrator regarding degree requirements.
Make sure all addresses on record in SIS are correct and up to date. While UVa has transitioned to paperless billing, other important documents may still be mailed to the “local” physical address on file.
Unpaid medical expenses (Student Health or UVa Hospital or Clinics), library fines, and parking tickets are posted to your student account in SIS and will result in registration blocks. Blocked registration at the beginning of the semester may result in a change of student status – negative consequences include complications with student loan repayment and/or visa status.
