Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Initiative

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics is committed to education, research excellence, and the expansion of institutional policies that enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion. One of our missions as a department is to create a work place that is respectful and values diverse backgrounds.  We work with the institution, and the community, to create an environment that is inclusive to all people regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, nationality, age, religious beliefs, physical abilities, or socioeconomic status.

If you have any questions and or suggestions, please contact Dr. Marty Mayo, mwm3y@virginia.edu.

Marty is our JEDI Ambassador.

Information for transitioning students:

The badge is the easy part! Students are able to change their preferred name themselves through the identity portal which is Step #3 here: New to UVA IT Checklist – UVA ITS (service-now.com) and upload a new photo Online Photo Submission | Academic ID Card Office (virginia.edu).

For Academic IDs, students then need to make an appointment with the ID office to pick up their new badges. Contact/Location | Academic ID Card Office (virginia.edu)

For Health Badges, the department will fill out an ID replacement request form with the preferred name, ID number and computing ID and the student can bring the form to the Health ID office. There should be NO REPLACEMENT costs for this!!

Once students have updated their preferred names– these should populate in Workday and SIS. UVA is still deadnaming these students on transcripts, graduation rosters, and other ‘official’ documents, so do what you can to protect our students — forewarn them when change is still impossible so they are not surprised, make sure you are calling out their preferred names at graduation diploma ceremonies, etc. and helping fix their names where you can so we can preserve dignity for our students!

Now for SIS and those old photos– once new photos have been uploaded and confirmed- Coordinators will need to email srsupport@virginia.edu with the student name and ID numbers – go ahead and send the SIS and UVA ID numbers with a request to REMOVE the old photo ID. The photo process runs Friday evenings. The new photo will then be the one that populates.
