Cancer Center Research Faculty Welcomes Ross Buerlein, MD
UVACCC welcomes Ross Buerlein, MD, Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, to its Cancer Therapeutics Research Program. His research focuses on gastroenterological and hepatobiliary treatments.
In a recent collaboration with Associate Professor of Hematology and Oncology Matthew Reilley, MD, Dr. Buerlein studied cell surface plectin as a potential biomarker for diagnosing cholangiocarcinoma from biliary epithelial cell samples. All cases showed positive plectin expression, indicating diagnostic promise.
Dr. Buerlein founded and leads UVA’s Haven Clinic, a resident- and student-run mobile outreach clinic providing free primary and basic psychiatric care to people experiencing homelessness. He earned his BS from James Madison University and spent two years in an NIH research lab. He earned his MD from Eastern Virginia Medical School, completed his internal medicine residency at UVA, and stayed for a gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship, including an extra year in advanced and interventional endoscopy. Dr. Buerlein and his wife, Katelyn, have three young children and enjoy family time, playing sports together, and relaxing on the golf course.
