Call for Letters of Intent: Educational Research and Scholarly Innovation Awards

January 10, 2024 by hmj4tw@virginia.edu

Educational scholarship is a significant component of the education mission of the University of Virginia School of Medicine (SOM). The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) is pleased to announce the 2024-2025 Call for Letters of Intent (LOI) for two distinct types ofRainbow over UVA hospital building awards:

  1. Innovation in Medical Education Award
  1. Educational Research Award

These 1-year awards support faculty activity related to the educational mission of the School of Medicine. Faculty include those working in: UME, GME, BIMS, and/or Public Health Sciences educational programs.  Support is provided to (1) conduct rigorous educational research or (2) develop projects that involve new educational approaches or novel applications of established approaches. The maximum 1-year award is $25,000.

In addition to a general call for submission related to any aspect of the education mission, we are also explicitly soliciting submissions that reflect the mission of the Brodie Committee.  The Anne L. Brodie Medical Education Fund Committee supports the innovation of generalist medical education in such areas as patient advocacy, patient-centered care, interprofessional education, etc. The committee has generously committed support to at least one recipient for the 2024 awards program. If you would like to be considered for Brodie funds, please include an additional 150 word statement outlining how your proposal aligns to the mission of the Brodie Medical Education Fund Committee.

The process involves two stages: letter of intent and full proposal.

Stage 1: Letter of intent (LOI): All faculty are invited to submit an LOI for either award.  Feedback is provided to all who submit.

Stage 2: Full proposal. A subset of LOIs are identified and investigators are invited to submit a full proposal.  Feedback is provided on all full proposals.

Please note that these funds are for distinct types of projects.

  1. Scholarly innovation projects must:
    • focus on the creation or application of novel teaching strategies, curricula, or interventions/programs related to learner assessment
    • outline an integrated series of learning activities designed to meet specific objectives
    • align the innovation’s overall objectives with the educational program in which they will be implemented
    • include a detailed evaluation plan that includes early/short-term outcomes of the educational innovation that can be measured during the funding period
    • include a plan for dissemination
    • include a plan for sustaining the innovation beyond the funding period
    • include a letter of support from department or division head.
  2. Educational research projects must:
    • be hypothesis-based or hypothesis-generating studies
    • use conceptual frameworks to ground the work
    • outline appropriate research methodologies for the design and analysis
    • align results with the conceptual framework/educational theory used to inform the work
    • include a plan for dissemination
    • include a letter of support from department or division head.

Faculty whose LOI is endorsed by the designated review committee will move to the second phase of the application process and be invited to submit a full proposal. The following sections outline the expectations and process for each award type.

The primary investigator must be a UVA faculty member in the SOM.
