Heman Shakeri, PhD

Assistant Professor

Dr. Heman Shakeri is Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Data Science, and Assistant Professor at UVA’s Department of Biomedical Engineering by Courtesy. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Kansas State University in 2017. Shakeri has a background in the analysis and engineering of interconnected systems and his research is on developing machine learning solutions for identification and control of complex biological systems.

Education

BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering, Tehran Polytechnic, Tehran, Iran.
PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering Kansas State UniversityManhattan, Kansas.

Research Interests

Dr. Shakeri’s research develops AI systems for glucose prediction that are accurate, reliable, and safe for real-world artificial pancreas deployment. By grounding AI in established mathematical principles of how biological systems evolve over time, Dr. Shakeri builds prediction algorithms that respect the underlying physiology of glucose regulation rather than treating it as an abstract pattern-matching problem. His research also establishes rigorous evaluation standards that test AI performance during the high-stakes moments—post-meal spikes, hypoglycemic events—where reliable prediction is essential for patient safety, rather than during the stable periods where any simple method would suffice. Ultimately, this work aims to enable fully automated diabetes management: AI systems that can detect meals, anticipate physiological changes, and make safe dosing decisions autonomously.

Personal Activities

Dr. Shakeri enjoys spending time with family and playing with his sons, Badminton, and Chess.
