Carlene has been in the healthcare field for over 24 years, mostly conducting direct patient clinical care within an inpatient hospital. As a Clinical Research Coordinator II with the CDT, she is involved in both Type 1 and 2 Diabetes research. Carlene is the lead Clinical Research Coordinator for the ABC-WIT clinical trial and backup coordinator for two other trials. Part of her duties are being directly involved with the screening and consenting processes for participant recruitment. Carlene also has experience in a clinical setting obtaining specimens, performing ECG’s, and overseeing vitals. With her background, she is an expert on creating a safe and secure environment for her patients. This helps her to learn about and listen to her participants, advocate for them, and give them a voice to feel empowered regarding their diagnosis.

Personal Activities:

In Carlene’s free time, she enjoys continuing her 8-year term of volunteering at the Blue Ridge Free Clinic in Harrisonburg, Va. Having heavy community involvement and caring for people provides her with a sense of fulfillment in her life. She likes to get out in nature to hike and backpack, go off-roading in my Jeep, and enjoy the sounds of nature. She also loves to cook and bake when she is unable to get out in the mountains.
