Growing Our Expertise
This year, we have specifically focused on growing our expertise in the following areas:
- Global Health
- Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
- Pediatrics
- Research
In doing so, we have been able to bring back some alumni from our residency program. Their partnership has helped us with launching new opportunities for outreach to local and global communities.

Eldoret, Kenya
Just this year, our faculty and fellows have traveled to some of these international destinations: Sweden, South Korea, Germany, Taiwan, China, Kenya, Mexico, and Nepal.
Closer to home, we continue to refine our efforts on providing exemplary pediatric emergency medicine, EMS, and research. Our faculty are partnering with UVA Health experts and community members to improve upon existing services and to bring in new services. Our research office is currently growing as well and is continuing to enroll patients in clinical studies.
We are excited that the reenergization of support is empowering us to train the next generation of emergency medicine physicians by bringing in visiting speakers and international students, providing funds for equipment purchases, and building new partnerships.
We also wish to extend a shoutout to our high achieving Medical Toxicology team, who have been in the news consistently this year, and to Dr. Robert Reiser, who retired after 26 years and received Associate Professor Emeritus.
