Dr. Gregory Saathoff and ParadeRest are commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II by erecting signs to honor eight local veterans killed at Pearl Harbor and during the D-Day invasion, including UVA alumnus Marine 2nd Lt. Harry Hamilton Gaver Jr. Dr. Saathoff is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine & Public Health Sciences as well as the Co-founder of ParadeRest. He emphasizes that “remembering is active rather than passive” and seeks to raise awareness about the true meaning of Memorial Day. ParadeRest has been actively gathering information, photos, and biographies of local and UVA-connected veterans through an oral history project for the Library of Congress. Their goal is to ensure these sacrifices are never forgotten and to inspire pride in the community’s contributions to the nation.
