Christopher R. McCartney, MD

Christopher R. McCartney (he/him) is currently serving as the Interim Chief for the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, succeeding Dr. Zhenqi Liu who served as Division Chief from 2012 to 2021. Dr. McCartney earned his medical degree and completed his Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Mississippi. He came to the University of Virginia as a first-year endocrinology fellow in 1999, and he joined the faculty in 2003.

Dr. McCartney pursues reproductive neuroendocrinology research, especially as it relates to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and he has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2000. He served as program director for the Endocrinology and Metabolism Fellowship Training Program from 2011 to 2020, and he served as a Council member for the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology and Metabolism (APDEM) from 2014 to 2021, including a two-year term as APDEM President (2018-2020). Dr. McCartney is the Immediate Past Chair of the Endocrine Society’s Clinical Guideline Committee (2018-2021); he currently serves as an Endocrine Society Guideline Methodologist; and he will be the Clinical Science Chair for the Endocrine Society’s 2023 Annual Meeting.

Dr. McCartney and his wife have three wonderful daughters, all of whom are highly-enthusiastic former/current Virginia Tech students. (Don’t tell anyone.)
