photo of Dr. Peter HamPeter was a beloved faculty member and family doctor in the Department of Family Medicine at UVA. His intellect, wisdom, creativity, warmth, and disarming sense of humor were just a few of the reasons he was cherished as a doctor, teacher and mentor.

In addition to being a doctor, Peter was a naturalist, fly fisherman, and avid bird watcher. He was a voracious reader of history, a coin collector, a painter and writer. Peter was aware that these wide-ranging interests enriched not only his own life but his ability as a doctor. He recognized and felt the strain of multiple clinical, academic and administrative demands, and how the relentless need to multitask often came at the expense of inspiration and creativity. He keenly felt the need to temper this strain with balance, and turned to his other interests to keep him energized.
