James E. (Jef) Ferguson, II, MD Chair

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Virginia Health System.  On behalf of the faculty, fellows, residents and staff, we welcome you.  Our mission is to provide excellence, innovation and superior quality in the care of patients, in the training and mentoring of health professionals, and in the creation and sharing of knowledge in women’s health. Our Department has a long history of success in these areas as a result of our teamwork, collaboration and mutual support among our members.

Reasons for visiting our website vary by individual. Many visit to learn more about primary and subspecialty care. We offer patient-centered care for uncomplicated pregnancies and a host of various gynecologic conditions at a variety of convenient locations including the Northridge Campus (just west of Grounds), the Primary Care Center (on Grounds), and in Louisa County to the east.

We also offer pioneering and technologically advanced sub-specialty care in the areas of high-risk pregnancies (Maternal-Fetal Medicine, both obstetrical and medical complications and fetal diagnostic services); cancers of the reproductive track (Gynecologic Oncology); female pelvic continence  (Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery); menopausal medicine (Midlife Health); and in unique non-surgical approaches to treat uterine fibroids (Fibroid Treatment Center) (MR guided focused ultrasound).

The combination of the unparalleled expertise of our faculty and our colleagues and the state-of-the-art facilities and technology of our medical center, allows us to provide our patients with the most advanced care available in the region – all at one site.

Others visit our website to learn more about our Residency and Fellowship training programs. Our programs provide a wide range of clinical experiences as well as exposure to research opportunities. Our resident graduates are highly sought after and pursue prestigious fellowship and private practice opportunities on a regular basis. Our fellows are recruited by premier academic health centers. Our faculty is strongly committed to training the next generation of academic generalists, sub-specialists, and physicians-scientists in obstetrics and gynecology.

No matter your reason we are pleased you have chosen to visit our web site. As you will know after your visit, in all we do, we work to improve women’s health both today and in the future. We hope you choose to be a part of our future. Please feel free to contact us if you’d like to learn more about women’s health at Mr. Jefferson’s University.
