What is the Evaluation Process?

Adult Patients

Audiologic, medical, otologic and radiological examinations may include, but are not limited to:

  • Hearing evaluation
    • Testing with and without amplification
    • It is imperative that the patient bring his/her hearing aids and earmolds to the cochlear implant evaluation
  • Parent/ Family counseling
  • Otologic examination (hearing history and health)
  • CT and/or MRI radiographic studies
  • Review of immunizations
  • Some individuals may also require:
    • Balance evaluation
    • Other medical clearance, depending on specific health or medical issues

 

Pediatric Patients

Audiologic, medical, otologic and radiological examinations may include, but are not limited to:

  • Sedated electrophysiologic measures
    • Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
    • Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR)
  • Hearing evaluation
    • Testing completed with and without amplification
    • Please bring hearing aids and earmolds to the cochlear implant evaluation
  • Speech and Language evaluation
    • Assessment of current speech/language and pre-lingual communication abilities
    • Discussion of communication goals and realistic expectations
  • Developmental evaluation
    • Formal and informal evaluation of child’s developmental milestones and capacity to learn
    • If your child has had a developmental assessment, please forward those results to the UVA CI team
  • Otologic examination
  • CT and/or MRI radiographic studies
  • Review of immunizations
  • Other medical clearance, depending on specific health or medical issues
