UVA is pleased to announce the election of Dr. Jochen Zimmer to the prestigious Charles Slaughter Professorship in Physiology, effective July 1, 2024. This esteemed appointment, which will run through June 30, 2029, recognizes Dr. Zimmer’s outstanding contributions to the fields of physiology and biophysics, as well as his exceptional leadership within the department over the past decade.
The Zimmer Lab investigates the molecular mechanisms by which cells construct carbohydrate-based materials to reinforce their boundaries, including structures like plant cell walls, bacterial biofilms, and extracellular matrices. Using a combination of biochemical and structural biology techniques, such as X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM, his laboratory aims to understand and engineer the secretion systems that transport polysaccharides across membranes, with applications in both health and disease. Since joining us as an Assistant Professor in 2009, his dedication to excellence in both research and teaching has made a lasting impact on the department and the broader scientific community.
