Drs. Jochen Zimmer and Ilya Levental Receive Dean’s Excellence Awards for Faculty Research and Teaching

The University of Virginia School of Medicine is proud to announce that Dr. Jochen Zimmer has been named the recipient of the Dean’s Excellence in Faculty Research Award, and Dr. Ilya Levental has been awarded the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award for the 2024 academic year. These prestigious honors recognize their exceptional contributions to research and teaching, as well as their steadfast commitment to advancing knowledge in their respective fields.

Dr. Zimmer, an internationally recognized leader in molecular physiology and structural biology, has earned acclaim for his pioneering research on carbohydrate-based materials and their role in cellular processes. His groundbreaking work has far-reaching implications across various biological systems, including disease mechanisms, the development of new biomaterials, and understanding cellular structure and function.

Dr. Levental’s innovative teaching methods, dedication to student success, and passion for creating an engaging learning environment have distinguished him as a leader in the classroom.
