C. Edward Rose Jr., MD
Division Chief 2011-2017
Ed Rose joined the UVA faculty in 1979, following a residency in internal medicine and a clinical fellowship in pulmonology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and a stint in Denver as a research fellow. Dr. Rose served as president of the UVA Hospital clinical staff in the late 1980s, and became chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in 2011.Dr. Rose and his wife Karren have two children, Katie Rose Fallis and Charlie Rose, as well as four grandchildren. Charlie is an infectious diseases physician practicing in Lexington, Kentucky. The Roses have a house at Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke where they go to relax; Dr. Rose comments, “On Saturday mornings there, I get up before 5 am to catch shad with a throw net, then go out on the lake an hour or so later to catch striped bass, which we enjoy for lunch or dinner later in the day.”
Jonathon D. Truwit, MD, MBA
Division Chief 1993-2011
Dr. Truwit received his B.S.E. from Duke University in 1979, and his M.D. from Georgetown University in 1983. Following residency and fellowship at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Truwit joined the faculty at the University of Virginia in 1989 as the Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit. He became the Interim Chief of the Division in 1993, and subsequently the E. Cato Drash Professor and Chief of the Division, serving in that capacity through 2010. Dr. Truwit was appointed as the Senior Associate Dean for the School of Medicine in 2002 and the Chief Medical Officer for the Medical Center in 2009 and served in those leadership positions until 2014.
Not only was Dr. Truwit recognized as an excellent clinician, but he also received numerous teaching awards, twice awarded the Basic Science Teaching Award and twice awarded the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award.
During his time at the University of Virginia, Dr. Truwit launched the Critical Care Training Program and expanded the Division. Throughout his career at the University of Virginia, Dr. Truwit was known as an outstanding clinician and teacher and served as a mentor to numerous trainees. In January, 2014, Dr. Truwit moved to Milwaukee to become the Chief Medical Officer for Froedtert Hospital, the primary teaching hospital at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dudley F. Rochester, MD
Division Chief 1976–1993
Born in Bennington, Vermont, Dr. Rochester received his A.B. from Columbia College in 1950 and his M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1955. After residency and research fellowship at Columbia, Dr. Rochester served in the U.S. Army from 1960 until 1962, when he joined the pulmonary faculty at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. He moved to the University of Virginia to become the E. Cato Drash Professor and Chief of the Pulmonary Division in 1976 and served in that capacity until 1993, when he became Professor Emeritus.
Over his career, Dr. Rochester was a member of the Albemarle County Medical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Clinical and Climatological Association, American College of Chest Physicians, American Federation for Clinical Research, American Physiological Society, Association of American Physicians, Medical Society of Virginia, New York Academy of Sciences, and New York Lung Association. He was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and served as the President of the American Lung Association of Virginia from 2000 – 2002. His awards and honors include the American Lung Association of Virginia’s Douglas Southall Freeman Award in 1997, the Volunteer Excellence Award for Development in 2000, and the Will Ross Medal in 2005. In 2004 he was elected a lifetime member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Lung Association. An endowed chair was established in his honor in 2007, the Dudley F. Rochester Professorship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
Under his leadership, Dr. Rochester enhanced research programs in the division, both in his area of interest, respiratory muscle dysfunction, and in the areas of lung injury and inflammation. In addition, he led the effort to transition the institution from a combined Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit to a dedicated Medical Intensive Care Unit for the division and Department of Medicine at the University of Virginia. He was succeeded by Dr. Jonathon D. Truwit in 1993.
John L. Guerrant, MD, MS
Division Chief 1962-1976
Born in Callaway, Virginia, Dr. Guerrant received his B.S. from Hampton-Sydney College in 1933 and his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1937. After medical residency in Philadelphia, he was a research fellow and resident at the University of Virginia, receiving his M.S. in 1942. He then joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps as Captain and army physician and Director of the Clinical Laboratory with the University of Virginia’s 8th Evacuation Hospital from 1942 until 1946 in WWII in the North African and Italian theaters.
Dr. Guerrant joined the faculty at the University of Virginia in 1946, rising in rank to Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Pulmonary-Allergy Division in 1962. He was the founder of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory, and was instrumental in developing the Pulmonary and Allergy programs at the University of Virginia. Dr. Guerrant semi-retired as Professor Emeritus of Medicine in 1976, and then chaired the Medical Society of Virginia’s Professional Review Organization. In addition, he continued to be active in his beloved clinic and profoundly influence students, residents, fellows and faculty for years thereafter.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Guerrant was President of the Albemarle County Medical Society, Virginia Thoracic Society, Virginia Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association, and the Southwest Allergy Association. He received the Raven Award for excellence in service and contribution to the University of Virginia in 2006. Moreover, he was honored by an Endowed Chair, the John L. Guerrant Professorship in Pulmonary Medicine, in 2006. Dr. Guerrant passed away on February 11, 2012, leaving a legacy of service to the University of Virginia, Albemarle County, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
One of the hallmarks of a Division Chief is to leave the Division better than they found it, and unquestionably that can be said of Dr. Guerrant, developing the Pulmonary Allergy Division during his tenure as Chief that ultimately led to recruitment of outstanding successors. He was succeeded by Dr. Dudley F. Rochester as the Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and by Dr. Thomas Platts-Mills as Chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology.
