John P. Mugler, III, PhD, Director of Medical Imaging Research, Professor of Radiology and Medical Imaging, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging at the University of Virginia, has been elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) by the 2019 NAI Fellows Selection Committee and Board of Directors.

Election as a Fellow in the NAI is reserved for those individuals who have “demonstrated a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on the quality of life, economic development, and welfare of society. Election to NAI Fellow status is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.”

With the new class of 2019 Fellows, there are now a total of 1,229 NAI Fellows worldwide, representing more than 250 universities as well as governmental and non-profit research institutions. NAI Fellows collectively hold over 38,000 U.S. patents. Dr. Mugler is only the seventh UVA faculty member to be elected a Fellow since the NAI was inaugurated in 2012.

The 2019 Fellow Induction Ceremony will be held on April 10, 2020 at The Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.
