The NIH-funded landmark PE-TRACT trial, testing catheter-directed therapy for submassive PE, is in full swing.  Dr. Sista, the trial’s national principal investigator and study chair, will discuss how the trial came to be, its scientific rationale, and its current status.

Akhilesh K. Sista, MD FSIR FAHA, is a Professor and Vice Chair of Radiology (Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology) at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, NY. Dr. Sista’s clinical and research expertise lies in the medical and endovascular treatment of venous thromboembolic disease (VTE). He has authored or co-authored > 90 publications, and has given > 250 lectures at national and international conferences.  He is the national Principal Investigator of the PE-TRACT trial of catheter-directed therapy for PE, funded by the National Institutes of Health. He chaired the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Foundation’s Research Consensus Panel on Submassive Pulmonary Embolism in December 2015. He was the National Principal Investigator for Penumbra, Inc.’s multicenter (22 sites) prospective trial (N=119) of the Indigo CAT-8 thromboaspiration device for submassive PE (EXTRACT-PE), and was the co-National PI for the multicenter RESCUE study (N=120) of the Bashir Endovascular Catheter for submassive PE. He co-chaired the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Statement on Interventional Therapy for Pulmonary Embolism and is on the Steering Committee and co-chair the InterventionaI Committee of the NHLBI-funded C-TRACT trial.  He has served on the Board of Directors for the Society of Interventional Radiology and is currently chair of the AHA’s Vascular Imaging and Interventions committee.  He was awarded the 2018 Mark A. Creager prize for research excellence by the Society of Vascular Medicine and has been recognized as a Fellow of both the Society of Interventional Radiology (FSIR) and the American Heart Association (FAHA).

Dr. Haskal is a tenured professor of radiology and medical imaging in the Division of Interventional Radiology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He received his M.D. at Boston University School of Medicine and completed residency and fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. As a sought after teacher and educator, Dr. Haskal has given more than 500 invited lectures worldwide and been awarded numerous honorary fellowships, national, international and societal awards for leadership, service and research excellence. He has designed, participated or led more than 40 research trials. Dr. Haskal has also published more than 400 scientific manuscripts, chapters, review, abstracts and editorials in journals ranging from Human Gene Therapy and the New England Journal of Medicine, to Circulation, JVIR, Radiology, Hepatology and more. Dr. Haskal was the editor in chief of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) from 2011-2020, doubling its manuscript submissions, raising its impact factor and introducing numerous print, electronic and new media offerings.
