17th Annual Tegtmeyer Lecture – Challenges in Radiology Practice: Now and in the Future

UVA Radiology & Medical Imaging presents the 17th Annual Tegtmeyer Lecture, titled: “Challenges in Radiology Practice: Now and in the Future.”

The talk will be delivered by James Spies, MD, MPH, FSIR, FACR, FAHA, who is professor and chair of MedStar Georgetown University’s Department of Radiology.

The lecture will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at 5 p.m. in the Educational Resource Center on the 2nd Floor, Auditorium A. The talk will also be available to watch virtually through the following Zoom link.

The Tegtmeyer Endowed Lectureship was established in 2009 to honor Charles J. “Tunk” Tegtmeyer. In addition to an annual lecture, the project supports scholarly and educational activities for trainees and initiatives dedicated to the advancement of interventional radiology.

About the Lecturer

James Spies, MD portraitDr. Spies is Professor and Chairman in the Department of Radiology at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC. After attending Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. Spies completed a Radiology Residency at the University of California, San Francisco and an Interventional Radiology fellowship at New York University School of Medicine. He also has completed a Masters Degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.

He has an active practice in Uterine Embolization for fibroids and has performed extensive research in the procedure and the assessment of therapies for uterine fibroids. He has over 100 published peer-reviewed articles, 20 chapters, over 400 invited presentations and has edited a text on uterine embolization.

He is a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) and the American College of Radiology and has served on numerous national committees for both organizations. He has served as the Chair of the SIR Foundation, President of the SIR, and as a Trustee of the American Board of Radiology. He has been recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Society of Europe (CIRSE) and as an Honorary Fellow of the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR). He was awarded the SIR Gold Medal in 2019 and the SIR Foundation’s Leaders in Innovation Award in 2022. He has the been the Associate Executive Director of the American Board of Radiology for Interventional Radiology since July 2020.
