The University of Virginia had a remarkable showing at the 2025 American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Annual Meeting, held May 2–5 at the Seattle Convention Center. Faculty, residents, and medical students contributed across diverse scientific sessions, panels, poster presentations, and leadership forums, reinforcing UVA’s national reputation for excellence in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.
Highlights from UVA Surgery Team Members:
- Dr. Leora Yarboro played a major role throughout the conference, moderating the “Adult Cardiac Scientific Session: Evolving Strategies in Heart Transplantation,” leading the “AATS/TSRA Preparing Yourself for an Academic Career” workshop, and speaking on advanced surgical therapies and CABG in heart failure.
- Dr. Irving Kron served as both a commentator for mitral valve surgery sessions and a featured speaker in Leadership 101: Non-Clinical Skills during the early career development session.
- Dr. Linda Martin moderated the Thoracic Scientific Session: Patient Reported Outcomes and presented the abstract “Surgical Outcomes in AFT-46: CHI03” on immunotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer.
- Dr. Kenan Yount was a panelist in the inaugural AATS/TSMA Research Competition for medical student finalists.
- Resident Matthew Weber, MD presented three impactful projects: two posters on CABG and myocardial infarction during poster sessions, and a regional analysis in a perioperative scientific session.
- Resident Sean Noona, MD presented a multicenter study on left ventricular assist devices in the mechanical circulatory support session.
- Resident Steven Young, MD delivered a rapid fire presentation on percutaneous ventricular assist devices versus intra-aortic balloon pumps.
- UVA Medical Student Gabriel Ramos presented his innovative AI-based analysis of patient education materials during the TSMA competition.
