VCDPE’s Advanced Training On-Demand Webinars hone the skill sets of trained Lifestyle Coaches, Program Coordinators, and Master Trainers to successfully deliver the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) lifestyle change program. Our Advanced Trainings are created and delivered by subject matter experts and focus on four competencies:

These webinars complement Lifestyle Coach Training and are not a substitute for formal training.
All VCDPE On Demand webinars qualify as Advanced Coach Training (AT) for lifestyle coaches and program coordinators now required under CDC DPRP Standards.
After registering for an on-demand webinar you have 60 days to complete the webinar to receive a certificate of completion.

Summary: Learn from an expert about a variety of evidence-based strategies that coaches can incorporate into the delivery of the National DPP Lifestyle Change Program to promote long-term weight loss and prevent or minimize weight regain. This presentation will also provide top lifestyle coaching approaches used to address commonly reported participant barriers to achieving both weight loss and physical activity goals and ways to deal with weight plateaus and minimize weight regain.

Presenter Bio: Linda M Delahanty, M.S., R.D.
Linda Delahanty is Chief Dietitian and Director of Nutrition and Behavioral Research at Massachusetts General Hospital’s Diabetes Center and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is a nationally recognized authority on nutrition and lifestyle interventions for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. She was a recipient of the National Award for Excellence in the Practice of Dietetics Research and the Medallion Award for lifetime achievement from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and received the American Diabetes Association’s Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award in 2015.
Ms. Delahanty has been a co-investigator on five NIH-funded multi-center clinical trials. She was chair of the Dietitians Committee for the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial and was one of the architects of the lifestyle interventions for the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, the Diabetes Prevention Program, Look AHEAD, the TODAY study and the Breast Cancer Weight Loss study. She has conducted outcomes research on the cost effectiveness of medical nutrition therapy, predictors of weight outcomes and the translation of lifestyle interventions into primary care. Ms. Delahanty was one of the Principal Investigators for the NIH-funded REAL HEALTH Diabetes study to translate the Look AHEAD lifestyle intervention into primary care of patients with type 2 diabetes who are overweight or obese. She has authored both professional and lay articles on the role of nutrition and lifestyle in achieving weight loss and improved glycemic control and has been providing medical nutrition therapy to patients for diabetes and weight management for over 30 years. Ms. Delahanty has authored two books; 101 Weight Loss Tips for Preventing and Controlling Diabetes and Beating Diabetes: Lower Your Blood Sugar, Lose Weight, and Stop Diabetes and Its Complications in Their Tracks. She currently directs the Path to Lifestyle Change diabetes prevention program at Mass General Hospital’s Diabetes Center.

Summary: The “plate method” is a simple, easy-to-learn strategy for making better food choices. This webinar goes a step further to provide background on the role of macronutrients—carbohydrates, protein, and fat—in the body as well as details on important vitamins and minerals. Lifestyle coaches will obtain resources to help guide class participants in improving their diet in practical ways.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the purpose and scope of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), and how it influences nutritional guidelines for the population.
2. Identify the macronutrients—carbohydrates, protein, and fats—and the role each plays in the body.
3. List the most nutritionally dense options for each macronutrient.
4. Define micronutrients, including the four “nutrients of concern,” as described in the DGA. Name foods that are a good source of each micronutrient.

Summary: It is important for lifestyle coaches to create a growth-fostering environment for participants. A coaching environment that cultivates trust, shows empathy and values presence can increase connectedness and build deeper relationships with participants. When people feel listened to and seen, they are more energized and confident to reach their goals. Lifestyle coaches who grow their relational skills and pair these with strong coaching skills, increase the potential for participants to move toward positive lifestyle changes.
This presentation dives deeper into the practical application of coaching skills for engaging DPP participants in lifestyle change. The presenter will review relationship qualities and core coaching skills that are foundational for a strong coaching relationship.

Summary: Building lasting lifestyle behaviors is important for preventing type 2 diabetes and yet, changing health behaviors and creating new habits can be challenging for participants. All too often, well-intentioned participants set big health goals and become frustrated when they are not reached. This can cause them to lose confidence in their ability to make sustainable lifestyle changes.
A key to changing behavior and building healthier habits is to create small achievable behavioral patterns. The intent of this presentation is to share the science and key principles behind a science-based behavioral design method focused on making small changes. Attendees will learn practical techniques and strategies for applying the behavioral approach with Diabetes Prevention Program participants.

Stephanie Toney is an ambitious and confident leader at CHW Strength. She is responsible for innovatively motivating and empowering Community Health Workers (CHWs) as the team provides public health services in communities. Enthusiastically, Stephanie Toney continues towards 23 years of experience as a nurse and 12 years in public health. Summary: The U.S. population is changing. By the year 2055, it is estimated that half of the population will identify themselves in a racial or ethnic group other than non-Hispanic white. Attitudes, beliefs, values and practices about preventive care and food choices are influenced by an individual’s culture and ethnic background. To best support participants through lifestyle and behavior change, it is important to understand the complex factors that impact the diet and health of our growing culturally diverse populations. This webinar will review the health risks, health behaviors and food practices of four major ethic groups in the U.S.

Advanced Training in Group Coaching Skills
The National DPP Group Coaching Certificate Program was developed in partnership with the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM), National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). This training focuses on developing advanced skills in group coaching for National DPP Lifestyle Coaches based on the best evidence and practices for group-based health and wellness coaching.
The program covers five coaching competency categories that are essential for group-based health and wellness coaching:
- Category I: Building Trust, Rapport, and Intimacy, and Creating Coaching Presence
- Category II: Enhancing Communication Skills
- Category III: Applying Skills Specific to Groups
- Category IV: Cultivating Self-Management Skills
- Category V: Propelling Health Behavior Change

As more and more people demand the convenience and accessibility of virtual learning, distance learning (DL) delivery of the National DPP Lifestyle Change Program has the potential to reach more people and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. But many National DPP organizations and Lifestyle Coaches are not optimally set up for DL or don’t know the DL strategies that support more engagement, better retention, and hence greater risk reduction. In this webinar, you will learn expert insights and tips from a practitioner who has been delivering programs through DL since 2008. Learn about the considerations you should take before you become a DL organization. Discover how to adapt facilitation techniques for the DL environment. Presenter Bio: Anne Wolf, MS, RDN
Anne Wolf, MS, RD is the Director of the Virginia Center for Diabetes Prevention & Education at the University of Virginia and a Master Trainer for Lifestyle Coaches of the National Diabetes Prevention Program. Anne earned her Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences from Cornell University and her Masters of Science from the Harvard School of Public Health. Anne has been involved in telehealth since 2008 when she worked with BMIQ, a secure platform the helps dietitians and medical practices optimize obesity care through using technology. She has been actively engaged within the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics including serving on the Tele-nutrition Evidence Analysis Library panel, speaking about telehealth at multiple national meetings and has developed two CME courses regarding online learning and telehealth for diabetes and diabetes prevention.
