Katy Nash Krahn, MS, LCGC
CAMA Research Manager
Katy Nash Krahn is a project manager. She received her BA in Biology with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Virginia and her MS in Genetic Counseling from the University of Minnesota and is a research genetic counselor certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics and licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine.
Krahn began her career with specialized training in biomedical ethics and genetics counseling. She gained experience managing research projects as a research genetics counselor and clinical research coordinator in pediatric craniofacial genetics. While in the Netherlands, Krahn broadened to biomedical engineering, where she invented and patented a new collagen-specific fluorescent probe.
As a Research Genetic Counselor and Family Studies Director of a craniofacial genetics lab at the University of Iowa, Krahn led projects focused on the genetics of cleft lip or cleft palate and worked with hundreds of families to study and identify new genes in orofacial clefting and development. At the Biomedical Engineering Tissue Lab at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands, she worked as a research analyst, where she developed and applied a novel idea to genetically engineer a fluorescent collagen probe for use in human cell cultures to visualize collagen orientation and growth in real time. Her invention, used in many cell-culture experiments, qualified her to manage the start-up of the first zebrafish lab at Mt. Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine to study liver regeneration, where she managed all aspects of the molecular biology lab.
Krahn leads the administration at CAMA, where she has coordinated the writing of numerous grant proposals, including the Pre-Vent multicenter U01, and managed Pre-Vent’s Leadership and Data Coordinating Center. In addition to coordinating the conduct of multiple research studies on large medical datasets projects, Krahn ensures ethical and regulatory compliance at the Center for Advanced Medical Analytics and manages finance and HR for the Center. She has served as a UVA Institutional Review Board (IRB) member for three years.
