Culture and Community
UVA Anesthesiology Statement of Inclusion
The University of Virginia Department of Anesthesiology strives to promote a welcoming culture where we embrace and appreciate all individual qualities and perspectives of our resident/fellow trainees as well as our nurse anesthetists, faculty, staff, and patients. Each day we actively work to transform our culture to promote excellence in clinical care, education, and research. We believe that the unique perspectives of our people make us stronger, facilitate collaboration, and aid in positive changes to the Department. We believe diversity is excellence expressing itself through every person’s perspective and lived experiences. We are committed to ensuring our community is welcome, safe, and valued at UVA Health System.
Community Engagement Committee
The University of Virginia Department of Anesthesiology is dedicated to fostering a supportive and collaborative environment within our community. As a way of promoting this value, we formed our Community Engagement Committee to foster a positive and inclusive environment and give back to our community. The committee has two subcommittees led by committed faculty champions: Community Outreach and Community Education.
Community Outreach
The UVA Department of Anesthesiology is committed to making a meaningful impact beyond the hospital by engaging with and giving back to the communities we serve. Our outreach efforts span a variety of initiatives, from safe medication disposal programs to health education for local students and participation in community events.
Additionally, our department is extremely fortunate that we have a very knowledgeable and internationally involved group of faculty leading our Global Health efforts. We have various opportunities for faculty and residents to be involved across the globe including case teleconferences, short- and long-term teaching and service trips, and a Global Health Leadership Track. Learn more about our Global Health Opportunities.
Community Education
The opioid crisis has changed the way we study, evaluate, and treat patients. Dania Cyd Chastain, PhD, Clinical Psychologist of Anesthesiology Pain Management, founded The University of Virginia Office of Pain Management and Opioid Stewardship (OPMOS) to establish and foster interdisciplinary, collaborative educational initiatives within UVA and in partnership with our local community. The team offers individualized education for healthcare providers and nonprofits, for patients and families, and for students and parents. Whether through education, outreach, or advocacy, UVA Anesthesiology remains dedicated to improving public health and strengthening our community.
