As we begin a new chapter in the UVA Department of Anesthesiology, we extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Peggy McNaull for her exceptional leadership as Chair. Dr. McNaull has been an inspiring, compassionate, and visionary leader—steadfast in the face of challenges, equitable in her decisions, and caring toward every member of our department. Her ability to listen, innovate, and bring ideas to fruition has left an indelible mark on our team.
Under Dr. McNaull’s leadership, the department has not only grown in size but also in strength, community, and connection. Her high aspirations and determination have led to countless accomplishments that will benefit us for years to come. While we are sad to see her go, we are thrilled for her new role as Chief Medical and Quality Officer at UNC Health. They are truly fortunate to have her, and we have no doubt she will bring the same passion and excellence to this new position as she did here.
We are also pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Mazzeffi will assume the role of Interim Chair starting January 12, 2025. Dr. Mazzeffi, our current Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs and Development, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to this role. We are confident that his expertise will guide the department during this transition period. His commitment to excellence aligns perfectly with our mission to support patient care, educate the next generation of physicians, and manage important research programs.
