Cancer Center Research Faculty Welcomes Jie Yang, PhD

Yang, JieThe Cancer Center is pleased to welcome Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Jie Yang, PhD, to the Cancer Biology Program.

Dr. Yang joins UVA from Scripps Research, where he completed his post-doctoral research studying the mechanistic role of DAP3-binding cell death enhancer 1 (DELE1) in relaying mitochondrial stress to the integrated stress response (ISR). He also revealed the structural mechanism by which seryl tRNA synthetase (SerRS) cross-regulates the lysine deacetylase Sirtuin-2.

His research interests include the structural mechanisms of macromolecular complexes, cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM), mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum stress, cellular stress responses, and understanding how proteins execute their biological functions at the molecular level.

Dr. Yang earned his BS in Biology from Wuhan University and his PhD in Biophysics from Case Western Reserve University, followed by his postdoctoral research at Scripps Research.

Outside the lab, Dr. Yang enjoys cooking for his wife, Daney, and their daughter, Anna. He is also an avid nature enthusiast and backpack hiker. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Yang to UVA!
