Michael Catalino, MD, MSc, Joins Cancer Center Research Faculty

Catalino, MichealThe Cancer Center welcomes Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery Michael Catalino, MD, MSc, to the Cancer Prevention and Population Health Program. Dr. Catalino also holds a courtesy appointment in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Dr. Catalino studies pituitary corticotroph tumors. This pituitary tumor subtype includes tumors causing both ACTH-dependent Cushing disease and the highly invasive “silent” non-ACTH secreting corticotroph tumors which are one of the leading precursors of pituitary carcinoma. His interest in the epidemiology and public health impact of these tumors is rooted in their high incidence in young women and high life-long recurrence rates. He specializes in endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery for invasive pituitary tumors as well as malignancies of the nasal and paranasal cavities. He also performs separation surgery for spine metastases. His patient care is tightly coordinated with pituitary neuroendocrine specialists and experts in radiation oncology and radiosurgery.

Dr. Catalino earned his BS in biological anthropology and anatomy and his MSc in global health from Duke University before earning his MD from Georgetown University. He completed a neurosurgery residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Catalino completed his fellowship in pituitary surgery and neuroendoscopy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and, before coming to UVA, Dr. Catalino completed a neurosurgical oncology fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Catalino to UVA!
