The Nelson Community Health Fair will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024, from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Nelson County High School! This event offers free health education and resources for the entire family. From providing sports physicals and immunizations for students to connecting you with local health resources. Over 30 local organizations will be participating, offering plenty of valuable information and services. COE team members will provide both cancer screening navigation and education services.

The task force aims to prioritize, act on, and decrease cancer disparities in the region, ensuring proactive cancer screenings and vaccinations. The next meeting is scheduled for July 22, 1- 3 pm, at the United Way Meeting Space in Danville. For more information, contact Ashley Banegas.

Thursday, August 15th, the National Park Service (NPS), Forefront Dermatology of Fishersville, and UVA OCOE will host a free skin cancer screening event for Shenandoah National Park employees. Forefront Dermatology of Fishersville will provide free skin cancer screenings, while UVA COE will be onsite for cancer screening navigation services and information. Shenandoah NPS Headquarters, from 9-noon and then 1-3 pm.
Providing cancer screening navigation services with a monthly educational focus on certain cancer types and/or cancer prevention information. A COE Navigation Team member will be present to provide cancer-related navigation services.
The Sunbeatables program begins a 16-course at Buena Vista City Public Schools- FW Kling ES on August 27, 2024.
The University of Virginia’s Comprehensive Cancer Center works with school programs to implement Ray and the Sunbeatables®: A Sun Safety Curriculum. This free, evidence-based curriculum educates children, parents, and teachers about sun protection and promotes sun safety behaviors to reduce children’s lifetime risk of developing skin cancer. The curriculum was developed by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

What: This event will be providing fresh produce from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, free clothes for community members, and cancer screening navigation services.
COE’s role: The cancer screening navigation team will be using the cancer screening checklist to inform attendees of the screenings they may be due for, and will be providing navigation services for local resources.
UVACC COE will be present but not hosting this event.
