Clinical Facilities

UVA HospitalUVA Medical Center

At the University Hospital, complete biochemistry laboratories and hormone assays are available 24 hours per day. The hospital has facilities for karyotyping through the Chromosome Laboratory. The Department of Radiology provides MRI, CT, ultrasound, DEXA and radiologic imaging services and can conduct studies for all types of endocrine diseases including inferior petrosal sinus and adrenal vein sampling. Nuclear Medicine provides all routine nucleotide imaging methods including radioiodine thyroid ablation, adrenal and parathyroid scanning as well as MIBG and technetium pyrophosphate bone scans. The hospital supports a dietary/nutritional service and a full metabolic kitchen is available through the Bionutrition Core. There is a fully staffed surgical pathology laboratory for the interpretation of surgical and cytological specimens, including immunohistologic studies.

Outpatient Endocrine Clinics

Our clinical faculty have active clinical practices, and our division sees over 12,000 outpatients a year. Endocrinology’s largest clinic is in the 415 Ray C. Hunt building (Fontaine Research Park), where five nurses and two nurse practitioners complete our clinical care group. The division also supervises a multidisciplinary Diabetes Education and Management Program (DEMP) involving nurse educators and dietitians. Through DEMP, diabetes and nutrition education is available every workday. The division maintains its own thyroid ultrasound units, and a DEXA scanner is on site at the 415 Ray C. Hunt building. Dynamic endocrine testing is performed in the clinic by trained endocrine nurses, and cytology services are readily available. UVA employs a fully electronic medical record (Epic).

Research Facilities

Laboratory Space

Aurbach Building, 450 Ray C. Hunt Drive, CharlottesvilleThe division’s faculty utilizes over 25,000 square feet of modern laboratory research space at the Gerald Aurbach Research Building and at the Medical School. This includes offices, research laboratories, computer facilities and animal facilities. The Aurbach Building is located in the Fontaine Research Park, approximately 100 yards from the outpatient Endocrinology Clinic.

Clinical Research

A Clinical Research Unit (CRU) with experienced nursing/ancillary support is located on the main medical campus and used extensively by members of the division for myriad clinical research projects, including those requiring frequent blood sampling over prolonged periods, euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamps, etc. Dedicated research cores (e.g., the Exercise Physiology Core Laboratory and Research Assay and Analysis Core) are also committed to supporting clinical endocrinology research.

Cancer Center

The NCI funded center was initiated in 1987 and offers excellent core laboratory facilities and support for new investigators. The endocrine program is one of seven within the center.

Center for Research in Reproduction

This NIH-funded center was recently renewed through the year 2024. Core facilities for hormone assay measurements are available and serve as a resource for NIH-supported reproduction research across the nation. Support for fellows and young investigators is available.
