Wellness initiatives
- Wellness days: In each resident’s schedule, we incorporate two full days off scheduled in advance intended to allow you to schedule things like routine medical appointments, catch up on “life” things, rest, relax, and indulge in self-care (whatever that means for you!).
- Resident retreat: Each year we choose a weekend in early fall during which our faculty and fellows cover the hospital for a full 24 hours for resident retreat. The retreat is planned by our PGY-2s and paid for by the department. The retreat typically involves renting a house where the residents gather to enjoy games, movies, and other activities (cooking, visiting wineries, hayrides). The group is assigned a short topic of discussion by the program director such as reviewing work hours rules, updating leave policies, and reviewing well-being survey data.
- Karaoke Party: Initially founded by a previous Gyn Oncology fellow, Dr. Jeanine Staples, we have an annual karaoke party hosted by our Gyn Oncology department that is often themed (Halloween, 1970s, etc).
- ACOG National Well-Being Week: Each February, our PGY-1s plan our Well-Being Week activities which are funded by the department. Check out our Instagram for more!
Culture of Wellness
Vastly more important than any of our individual initiatives is the overall culture of wellness, support and mutual respect within our program at UVA. We strongly value camaraderie and positive group dynamics. We have seen that every year, as new residents come and older residents go, we become a new cohort, and are always open to new ideas and change as part of our commitment to a culture of wellness.
