Ob/Gyn Residency Curriculum
Our rigorous curriculum is designed so residents achieve competency in the ACGME Ob/Gyn Milestones in a supportive environment. For details on each rotation, please see Rotation/Call schedule.
Rotation specifics:
Inpatient Obstetrics rotations take place during all four years of residency at UVA Hospital’s Labor and Delivery. The resident OB team consists of 3 Ob/Gyn residents (intern, mid-level, and upper-level) and 1 off-service resident (FM or EM). There is dedicated teaching daily by Generalists, MFMs, midwives, and/or MFM fellows on service. The team cares for L&D patients in triage, labor, cesareans, antepartums, and postpartums. Our patient population is a broad mix of low and high-risk patients. We also have postpartum APP support. The team is supported by a dedicated staff of nurses, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, social workers, lactation consultants, and physical therapists.
Benign Gynecology rotations take place during all four years at UVA Hospital, the Primary Care Center Gyn clinic, and Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women clinic. The resident Gyn team consists of 3 Ob/Gyn residents (intern, mid-level, and upper level). There is dedicated teaching during Monday morning pre-operative conference during which potential surgical patients are reviewed. Interns present cases at Monday Colposcopy Conferences. The team covers Benign Gyn surgeries, inpatients, ED consults, colposcopy clinics, and Fridays at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women.
Gynecologic Oncology rotations take place during all four years at UVA Hospital and the Emily Couric Cancer Center clinic. The resident Gyn Onc team consists of 3 Ob/Gyn residents (lower-level, mid-level, upper-level) and the Gyn Oncology fellow. There is dedicated teaching during the Friday morning pre-operative conference during which the following week’s surgical patients are reviewed. Residents also attend Wednesday afternoon tumor board conferences. The team covers Gyn Onc surgeries, inpatients, ED consults, and Gyn Onc clinics. UVA’s Gyn Oncology division is world-renowned for its clinical, surgical, and research expertise. We are proud that UVA is an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
MFM rotations take place during years 1 and 2 at UVA Battle Building Obstetrics clinic. The MFM resident sees high-risk clinic patients daily with the MFM attending and fellow. MFM residents also have clinical experiences with patients receiving Cardio OB consults, Endocrine consults, pediatric cardiology consults, and Genetic Counseling, just to name a few.
Urogynecology rotations take place during years 2, 3, and 4 at UVA Hospital and Urogynecology clinic. The resident Urogyn team consists of 2 residents. There is dedicated teaching time during Urogyn journal club. The team covers Urogyn surgeries, inpatients, ED consults, and Urogyn clinics.
Night Float rotations take place during all four years at UVA Hospital. The resident NF team consists of 3 Ob/Gyn residents (intern, mid-level, and upper-level) and 1 off-service resident (FM or EM). The team covers all inpatient Ob/Gyn patients 6 nights per week. The team is supported by the Gyn Onc and MFM fellows, in-house Generalist attending, in-house Midwife, and on-call Gynecology attendings.
Ambulatory rotations take place during years 1 and 2 at UVA Battle Building Obstetrics clinic and Primary Care Center Gyn clinic. The ambulatory resident rotates through these clinics develop and refine their outpatient practice management skills and medical knowledge. Attending supervision is present in clinic during all sessions. There is administrative time built into this rotation to provide residents time to complete documentation and patient follow-up.
The Ultrasound rotation takes place during intern year at UVA Battle Building Obstetrics clinic and Primary Care Center Gyn clinic. The US resident rotates mainly through OB ultrasound clinic where they work closely with OB ultrasonographers, MFM fellows, and MFM attendings. The US resident also spends Monday mornings with REI attendings performing Gyn ultrasounds. Early exposure to ultrasound allows residents to become comfortable with ultrasound skills necessary for their PGY-2 antepartum, family planning, REI experiences.
The Family Planning rotation takes place during second year at UVA Hospital, the Primary Care Center Gyn clinic, and Whole Women’s Health. UVA Ob/Gyn is a Ryan Residency Training Program and follows the Ryan Program Didactic Curriculum.
The REI rotation takes place during second year at UVA Hospital, Primary Care Center Gyn clinic, and Virginia Fertility and IVF clinic . The REI resident rotates mainly at the IVF clinic where they work closely with three REI faculty. Residents become proficient in Gyn ultrasound skills and infertility counseling. Residents are also exposed to a myriad of endocrine disorders during this rotation.
The Elective rotation takes place during years 3 and 4. A dedicated elective allows residents to complete their mandatory PGY-3 research project, participate in away rotations, prepare for their careers with focused training, and prepare for board exams.
The Float rotation takes place during years 3 and 4 at UVA Hospital. The Float rotation was created to provide resident coverage in order to minimize the impact of resident leave on all team members. This limits pulling of residents, preserved resident education, and contributed positively to resident wellness.
The Swing rotation takes place during years 3 and 4 at UVA Hospital. The Swing resident starts their shift in the afternoons Tues-Fri and “swings” through the evening to improve coverage. They may cover a busy L&D triage, late OR cases, ED consults, etc. This allows the daytime team to sign out on time and the night team to have additional support during the beginning of their shift. The Swing resident also covers Saturday night shifts. Having a dedicated Swing resident has improved sign out, allowed residents to work 12-hour instead of 24-hour shifts, and improved work hours.
- Three hours of protected education time on Wednesdays from 7am-10am which includes Didactics, Grand Rounds, M&M, and Simulations/Workshops.
- Simulations/Workshops include topics such as laceration repair, laparoscopy skills, hysteroscopy skills, operative delivery, breech delivery, MVAs, robotics training
- One hour of protected time on Monday afternoons from 5pm-6pm for PGY-specific didactics throughout the year.
Monthly Journal club is held at attending homes where two articles are presented by residents
- PGY-1s are able to bedside assist on the robot
- PGY-2s, 3s, and 4s are able to sit on the robot console
- Upon graduation, residents are certified to operate robotically
- EMIGS modules and exams are paid for by the department
- EMIGS certification is expected by middle of PGY-2 year
Residents are assigned a formal mentor during their intern year to meet with at least semi-annually. This mentor serves as a guide throughout a resident’s 4 years and advises on their career planning, research projects, and personal lives.

- Residents are required to present a research project during their PGY-3 year at Resident Research Day
- PGY-3s are sent to CREOG workshop for residents to prepare to be teachers and leaders before their chief year
- We have Administrative Chief residents and Education Chief residents
- Residents have access to TrueLearn question bank and Prologs all through residency for CREOG and Board preparation.
- Mock written boards are given using TrueLearn at the end of PGY-4 year.
- Mock oral boards are held throughout residency for PGY-2s, 3s, and 4s
