Residency Applications
2023-2024 Application Cycle
- We are in the process of completing a holistic review of all applicants
- We will interview for 2 categorical and 2 advanced positions (4 total).
- 60 applicants will be invited to interview – we will not invite more applicants than we will interview
- All interviews will be conducted virtually via Zoom
- In order for your application to be considered, it must be complete and submitted no later than October 15th
- Should you be invited to interview, you will have 72 hours to respond and accept
- All applicants will be notified of their application status no later than November 3rd
Residency Application Requirements
The University of Virginia Health System is a participating member of the National Resident Matching Program. All applicants for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency appointments must register with the NRMP to participate in the Match. Foreign Medical Graduates should register either via their school (if applicable) or via the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). All applications to our program must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The Program does not accept hard copy applications via regular mail or fax nor electronic copies via email. The deadline for accepting applications is October 15th.
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Program Positions:
Our department has two tracks available to MD and DO candidates – the (4-year) Categorical Program and the (3-year) Advanced Program. It is possible to apply to either or both programs:
- Categorical (4-Year) Program: Includes completing your internship within our program. If you match through ERAS, you enter into a PGY1 position in June of that same year. You stay at UVA PM&R for four years.

(2 positions are available each match for this program.) - Advanced (3-Year) Program: Does not include the PGY1 year. You complete your intern year prior to joining our PGY2 class. If you match through ERAS, you enter into our program the following year in July, after completing your preliminary year requirements in another program. You stay at UVA PM&R for three years.

Each application is reviewed by the Residency Committee prior to extending an invitation to interview. A formal interview is required to be considered for the program. In order for your application to be reviewed we require, at minimum –
- Completed Application Form (CAF)
- MSPE (Dean’s Letter)
- USMLE or COMLEX score for Step I – we look for strong board scores and a pass on the first attempt. M4’s should have sat or scheduled Step II, CS and CK, by the time of interview – with passing scores on first attempt required by the end of interview season
- Medical School Transcript
- Three Letters of Recommendation (LOR) – at least one letter should be from a Physiatrist
Additional Requirements for International Medical Graduates:
- USMLE scores for Step I, II (CK) – we look for strong a strong pass on first attempt and a Pass on Step II (CS). These are required to be eligible for ECFMG certification
- TOEFL score of 275 or a first time pass on USMLE Step II, Clinical Skills as proof of language proficiency
- Graduation from medical school within the past five years
- Must have at least two clinical rotations in the United States and a Letter of Recommendation from each rotation
- ECFMG certification at the time of appointment
- Only the J1 Visa is supported
Also, graduation from medical school within the past five years is not required, but is preferred.
Interview Dates:
The interviews will be scheduled either morning or afternoon (approximately 9 a.m. until 12:30 or 1p.m. until 4:30) Eastern time virtually on the following dates. We hope you have a great interview season!

Resident/Fellow appointment is conditional based on the approval of the Clinical Staff Credentials Committee (CSCC) and the Clinical Staff Executive Committee (CSEC) and based on successful completion of credentialing, including but not limited to our review and acceptance of information from the criminal background check, successful completion of the pre-employment drug screen, passing applicable medical licensing exams (USMLE, COMLEX or MCCQE), receipt of a Virginia Medical License (if applicable), honest and accurate completion of all required paperwork and training modules prior to Orientation. For Residency and Fellowship Applicants requiring visa sponsorship:
Institutionally, we sponsor the J1 clinical visa. Decisions about sponsorship of other visa type are made at the department level. All graduates of international medical schools must hold a valid certificate issued by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to be appointed as a resident or fellow following the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
