Elective Rotation

Radiation Oncology Elective Rotation

We offer two opportunities for medical students and residents/fellows from related oncology disciplines to learn about the field of Radiation Oncology, enhance an oncology career, and experience the UVA Department.  Located in Charlottesville, a beloved small city in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains with an impressive food and music scene, our Department has an extensive array of treatment modalities including linac-based treatments for IMRT, SBRT, and SRS; Tomotherapy; Gamma Knife Radiosurgery; Brachytherapy for prostate, gynecologic, breast, and ocular cancers; and SpaceOAR placement.  Visiting learners are fully integrated into our Department and are welcomed and encouraged to participate in all Department activities including Sim Conference, resident didactics, Grand Rounds, clinical trials meetings, and Tumor Boards.

During the radiation oncology elective rotation, medical students will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty members and resident physicians and to participate in clinical and academic activities. This elective rotation is appropriate both for students interested in applying for radiation oncology residency and for students who plan a career in a different specialty but would like to have an educational experience in radiation oncology. Potential radiation oncology residency applicants will be expected to deliver a brief educational or research presentation during a departmental conference, but other students will not be asked to present.
