Residents

Unlike Medicine, graduates of an accredited School of Dentistry are not required to complete a post graduate residency program to practice Dentistry.  Unless a dentist plans to specialize, any such program is elective.  UVA Health has a one year/optional second year General Practice Dental Residency for licensed graduates of dental schools.  There are multiple goals associated with our program, but, in summary,  it allows our dentists to expand their clinical knowledge above that which is taught in dental school.  In addition, they learn more about providing care to more medically compromised patients through the department’s consult service for other UVA physicians and clinics.  Our residents comprise part of the Dentistry clinical dental staff.  In addition to rotating among the various dental and medical clinics associated with UVA Health, our residents (and faculty) have volunteered time and services at the Charlottesville Free Dental Clinic
