The UVA Department of Dentistry General Practice Residency Program (GPR) was established in 1974 and is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Our program was reaccredited in 2016 by the ADA accreditation agency, CODA. All GPR programs go through a re-accreditation process approximately every 7 years. We also adhere to the requirements of the Graduate Medical Education Committee at UVA Health.

UVA’s Dental Residency is a one year program with an optional second year committed to training well-rounded residents who will excel in their careers.  At UVA Health, our goal is to introduce residents to a broad range of educational opportunities allowing them to explore and develop career paths based on their clinical interests. Our GPR program offers a well-balanced, varied curriculum in which professional development and personal growth have equal importance.

One advantage of a 2-year tract is the opportunity to identify any such interest and pursue it.  Some incoming residents do not develop an interest in a specialty until they have been in the program for a while.  Our goal is to produce highly skilled General Practitioners.  Our hope is that the didactic and clinical experiences that our residents take from this program will make them more skillful in ALL the specialty areas than a comparable GP who has not had the benefit of a residency.
