About

Unlike Medicine, graduates of an accredited School of Dentistry are not required to complete a post graduate residency program to practice Dentistry.  Unless a dentist plans to specialize, any such program is elective.  UVA Health has a one year/optional second year General Practice Dental Residency for licensed graduates of dental schools.  There are multiple goals associated with our program, but, in summary,  it allows our dentists to expand their clinical knowledge above that which is taught in dental school.  In addition, they learn more about providing care to more medically compromised patients through the department’s consult service for other UVA physicians and clinics.  Our residents comprise part of the Dentistry clinical dental staff.  In addition to rotating among the various dental and medical clinics associated with UVA Health, our residents (and faculty) have volunteered time and services at the Charlottesville Free Dental Clinic

The program was established in 1974 and is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association, and it also adheres to the requirements of the Graduate Medical Education Committee at the University of Virginia Health System.

In accordance with University regulations and State and Federal Laws, there is no discrimination on the basis of age, sex, race, color or national origin. The Department of Dentistry, in coordination with the University of Virginia, School of Medicine is an equal opportunity employer.

All incoming Dentistry Residents must adhere to UVA GME Office and Medical Center Human Resources hiring requirements and GME Office Contract in preparation to begin the GPR program mid-June.

June 1 applicants must have graduated from an ADA accredited School of Dentistry or have completed/received certification/diploma for at least one year of an ADA accredited Advanced Dental Education program in order to comply with licensure requirements for temporary or permanent licensure by the Virginia Board of Dentistry.

The University of Virginia participates/requires application through  PASS (Postdoctoral Application Support Service); we do not participate in MATCH. Selection is made on the basis of academic performance, experience and extracurricular activities, recommendation and personal interview.
