Each spring, the UVA Department of Medicine recognizes outstanding contributions from DOM faculty and staff members with awards in various categories. Recommendations for awards are submitted to the division chief in which the DOM faculty or staff member works; chiefs then submit their nominations to the chair’s office in May of each year. Contact the assistant to the chair for more information.
Below is a list of the award categories, and the winners are published in the Department of Medicine, Medicine Matters newsletter.
AWARD CATEGORIES
Faculty:
- Clinical Care—as demonstrated by outstanding productivity, a high level of patient satisfaction, the development of new programs, or other areas of excellence.
- Research – as demonstrated by new grant funding, publication of research findings, or other areas of excellence.
- Teaching – as demonstrated by outstanding teaching reviews, development of new curricula, or other areas of excellence.
- Mentoring – as demonstrated by leadership in faculty development.
Staff:
- Administration – as demonstrated by managerial leadership.
- Outstanding Staff Contribution – as demonstrated by outstanding citizenship and support of the missions of the Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine’s annual staff awards are intended to acknowledge the contributions and accomplishments of an individual or team in the following categories: administrative excellence, excellence in financial administration, outstanding customer service, excellence in research administration, and leadership in laboratory service and clinical research.
Annual Staff Awards acknowledge the contributions and accomplishments of individuals or teams in the categories enumerated below.
Documentation requirements: No fewer than three (3) written nominations from co-workers, supervisors, or other employees or administrators with firsthand knowledge of performance during the award year are required.
Nominations should be specific, and consistent behavior should be established to meet the established criteria.
Employee of the Month recipients will be automatically entered into the pool of award applicants.
Upon receipt of all required documents, the Staff Employee Advisory Council (SEAC) and executive oversight from the DOM HRO will review the nominations and determine the recipients.
Awards may be given for the following: please read carefully, then select your category below.
- Administrative Excellence: The recipient of this award demonstrates consistent, high-quality performance in administrative support. This includes superior efficiency, punctuality, and the ability to perform multiple tasks effectively and promptly. The recipient demonstrates superior knowledge and mastery of pertinent systems and seeks new and creative ways to increase efficiency and productivity. The recipient serves as a resource to others, a mentor, and a positive role model to other employees.
- Excellence in Financial Administration: The recipient of this award demonstrates mastery of multiple financial systems across the Health System, School of Medicine, and University to produce detailed and accurate financial reports. The recipient demonstrates an understanding of University financial policies and procedures and displays the ability to translate those policies into daily functions. The employee serves as a resource to others in financial matters, ensures compliance with existing policies, and endeavors to institute systems and processes to maximize results.
- Outstanding Customer Service: The recipient of this award exhibits consistently exceptional customer service in addition to regularly assigned duties. The employee possesses extensive knowledge of the Health System and University and utilizes this knowledge to assist our guests and customers. The reliable employee presents the University, Health System, and School of Medicine positively and professionally.
- Excellence in Research Administration: The recipient of this award demonstrates mastery of the full life cycle of contracts and grants and/or clinical trials administration. The recipient demonstrates an understanding of the University and sponsors research administration policies and procedures and displays the ability to translate those policies in support of the research mission. The employee is a valued resource to principal investigators, ensures compliance with federal, state, and university guidelines, and seeks innovative and collaborative means to improve processes.
- Leader in Laboratory Service and Clinical Research: The award recipient will have learned or developed new methods and techniques to apply to ongoing research projects. The employee is willing and able to mentor new staff and lab members and is willing to be assigned to projects requiring their particular skill or ability. The recipient displays excellent technical and data analysis skills and combines teamwork and collaboration with other lab members. The employee possesses excellent communication skills, reliability, and dependability.
DOM Annual Staff Awards
The Staff Employee Advisory Committee comprises two representatives from each division except where divisions are combined because of their size, as are ID/Allergy and Endo/Rheumatology. Please complete the following form and click the SUBMIT button when finished.

Roles and Responsibilities
The Department of Medicine Staff Advisory Committee Roles and Responsibilities:
- Attend monthly meetings of the committee.
- Commit to serving a one-year term.
- Help establish a vision and strategies for the Department of Medicine’s commitment to engaging all employees.
- They represent their peer group by sharing ideas, needs, concerns, and feedback from their work areas and colleagues about proposed strategies, policies, and programs.
- Provide feedback on the possible barriers to proposed departmental strategies, policies, and procedures and offer suggestions for addressing those barriers.
- Suggest effective communication strategies and solutions to challenges.
- Be a voice of support for improved collaboration, transparency, and positive engagement with the department, carrying the message from the advisory committee to their work areas and colleagues.
