Patients and Families
Radiation Oncology, an integral part of the Cancer Center, provides state-of-the art radiation therapy to both pediatric and adult populations on an inpatient and an outpatient basis. Services are provided at two locations. The main department is located at the West Complex and the Moser Radiation Therapy Center is located on Rt 250 West, about four miles west of the main campus. The Moser Radiation Therapy Center provides easy access for outpatients from I-64, Rt 250 and Rt 29. Both locations provide routine radiation therapy services Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Patients are assessed via a multi-disciplinary approach by teams of cancer specialists and are discussed at tumor boards including ENT, Lung, Sarcoma, Neuro-Oncology, GU, GI, Breast, GYN, and Hematology/Oncology. Patients may be treated using a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
When a patient is referred for a Radiation Therapy consult, the Radiation Oncologist evaluates the patient and reviews all pertinent exam results, radiologic images, pathology and other reports. The physician conducts a physical exam and identifies any need for further studies. Once radiation therapy is deemed the treatment of choice and the patient agrees, the patient is scheduled for planning.
Radiation Therapy is a treatment modality that utilizes ionizing radiation to treat malignant disease primarily and some benign disease. The aim of radiation therapy is to deliver a prescribed dose of radiation to a defined tumor volume with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The goal of treatment may be curative or palliative. Treatments may be given using external beam radiation and/or through the use of brachytherapy techniques.
The Radiation Oncology service provides care using:
- conventional and CT simulators for localization and planning
- several treatment planning systems
- linear accelerators for external beam treatment
- high dose rate and low dose rate brachytherapy techniques
- a radiation therapy-specific information management system
- MRI Linac adaptive planning
