Why Work With Us?
Equipment
UVA Radiology has two 3T magnets (Prisma and Skyra) and a 1.5T magnet (Aera) in the main hospital, as well as a mobile Aera. We have an additional Skyra in our ERC clinic. We also have an MRI in the Focused Ultrasound Center, an interoperative (IMRIS) scanner and one of the first portable MRI scanners in Virginia, a Hyperfine .064T.
Advanced Imaging
Our MRI team images a huge variety of conditions and patients, including cardiac, devices, functional MRI, spectroscopy, IMRIS, focused ultrasound (FUS) and portable MRI scanning. Focused ultrasound, used to treat essential tremors, is groundbreaking work that UVA is proud to be at the forefront of.
Facilities
Our hospital MRI suite is less than 5 years old and about to undergo significant expansion. We’ll be adding a 4th MRI scanner, space for a 5th scanner in the future, and all-new prep and recovery space.

Our team of 33 Body Procedure/General Radiology RNs collaborate closely with radiologists to provide care to patients pre-, intra- and post-procedure during image-guided procedures. Procedures are performed in the main radiology department as well as the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and the outpatient radiology clinic at the Educational Resource Center.
Why Work With Us?
Consistent Schedule
Procedural nursing means a consistent Monday-Friday schedule, and a weekend shift is also available. Though the environment is fast-paced, our RNs typically care for just one patient at a time, creating a continuity of care and time to get to know each patient.
Independence and Respect
Our RNs collaborate closely with radiologists and technologists. But we manage patient sedation and perform pre- and post-op care on our own, meaning we have significant autonomy and independence in our own practice.
Diverse & Rewarding Challenges
We work with a wide range of patients and manage sedation during a diverse set of imaging-guided procedures, including ultrasound, CT and fluoroscopy. We also assist with cardiac imaging and device monitoring during MRIs. Every day and every patient are completely different.
We have about 30 interventional RNs in the Radiology Department, with approximately 20-25 in interventional radiology (IR) and 5 in interventional neuroradiology (INR). IR procedures are performed in state-of-the-art suites in UVA Health’s South Tower, while the INR Suite is located in the main radiology department.
