Prostate cancer remains the second leading cause of deaths due to cancer in North American men. Defining the communication pathways that operate within prostate cancer cells, which is to say, how proteins talk to each other, reveals vulnerabilities that can be exploited therapeutically. We have recently discovered a communication pathway involving the enzyme Parp7 in prostate cancer cells, and current efforts are directed at understanding how determine how it works, and if pathway inhibition with a new drug (in clinical trials) can kill prostate cancer cells. We use a variety of technical approaches including protein biochemistry, confocal microscopy, gene expression analysis by RNA-seq, and in vivo models of tumorigenesis. We also actively collaborate with groups who specialize in computational biology, synthetic chemistry, structural biology, nanoparticle delivery methods, and clinical application of basic science discoveries.
