Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Our Philosophy

In the University of Virginia Center for Public Health Genomics we continually aspire to excellence in research and education, and we recognize that the potential for excellence exists in individuals irrespective of their culture, ancestry, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, national origin, or religious or spiritual beliefs.

We recognize and acknowledge that genetic research has (and continues to be) misappropriated by groups in society that are seeking a pseudoscientific justification for racism. We unreservedly and utterly reject these abhorrent views.

We recognize that both explicit and implicit biases have shaped the demographics of the academic workforce and the student body, most notably based on racism or gender bias, and this has led to systemic underrepresentation of marginalized groups in society in higher education.

We tangibly benefit as a Center, and as a community, when we present our work, or discuss and solve problems, in an environment that includes a diverse range of intellectual viewpoints, life experiences, and academic training. We believe that diversity and inclusion strengthen student education, faculty careers and department culture. We actively strive to create a culture and community that reflect the values of inclusion and fairness. We strive to welcome every CPHG community member and make them feel valued.

Finally, as a Center within the University of Virginia, we fully embrace and implement the University Policy of Non-Discrimination and Equal Opportunity.
