Global Health Track

Global Health Opportunities

UVA dermatology residents have the opportunity to participate in the University of Virginia’s Global Health Leadership Track (GHLT), a program that prepares physicians to become leaders in global health practice, research, policy, and education. This spans all residency departments at UVA.

Alternatively, we have a department Global Health Track that allows residents access to some of the GHLT activities, while having some more flexibility in their elective choices.

Didactic Learning

Residents have the opportunity to participate in 2-week intensive courses in either Tropical Medicine or Policy and Practices in Global Health through UVA during their PGY-3 year. Round table dinners with guest speakers are held quarterly as well as a monthly Global Health Journal Club and International Rounds.

International Research

GHLT residents identify research needs abroad or at home related to global health and participate in related projects.

For more information, contact Dermatology GHLT Director Dr. Corina Rusu (car5ca@virginia.edu).

International Partnerships and Rotators

Our partnership with Ecuador’s Universidad San Francisco de Quito has been developing such that we are creating a framework for mutual exchanges of personnel. Similarly, we have hosted Dermatology residents from Romania and Colombia, two more potential locations for our residents and attendings to gain international clinical and research experience in the future.

Here are testimonials from recent international resident rotators:

Dr. Nicolas Kormos, MD, PhD (UMF Cluj Napoca, Romania)
Thanks to Dr. Rusu I had the chance to join the dermatology and dermatopathology teams and work with them. It was a wonderful experience and definitely a highlight of my residency training as I got to know great experts and observe them in action. This experience definitely changed my view on medical practice and I feel it improved my understanding of dermatology.”

Dr. Sara Saldarriaga, MD (Universidad CES, Colombia)
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to visit UVA Health System as an international dermatology resident from Colombia during April 2024; the wealth of knowledge I gained, the kindness and generosity of the Attending Doctors and residents, and the exceptional resources of the library and hospital have been truly inspiring. This experience has greatly enriched my professional journey and personal growth. Thank you, UVA Dermatology!! “

International Clinical Rotations

Residents interested in Global Health perform a 4-week rotation at an international site of their choosing. Various opportunities are available, including the American Academy of Dermatology Resident International Grant as well as Health Volunteers Overseas. Alternative sites in underserved communities in the U.S. (such as the Indian Health Service) may also be considered.

Our resident international rotations include sites in Chile with the Indian Health Services, Botswana, Ecuador, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
