ABIM Research Track
For applicants who have extensive research interests and academic subspecialty career goals, we offer an ABIM Research Pathway. This pathway consists of two years of internal medicine training in the categorical track, followed by at least three years of mentored research training and one or more years of clinical training in a subspecialty. Ongoing continuity clinic experience is required during the research years.
Distinctive Features
Specific requirements may vary among the subspecialties (see more information in the links below). ABIM research pathways are offered in these subspecialties:
- Allergy and Immunology
- Cardiovascular Medicine
- Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism
- Hematology & Oncology
- Infectious Diseases
- Nephrology
- Pulmonary and Critical Care
The research pathway is appropriate for candidates with a strong research background (usually indicated by a master’s degree or PhD) who want to pursue their research interests more intensively than is possible in a traditional residency program.
Financial Support
During the clinical years, trainees receive an annual stipend of $2,500 to cover books and equipment and an additional travel stipend of $1,500 a year. During the three research years, their base salary is supplemented by an additional $15,000 annually. This supplement is increased to $20,000 during the last year of training if the trainee submits a K award or similar career development grant.
Applicants to the ABIM Research Pathway should review the application criteria for all applicants (see Application section of the residency program website), as these criteria also apply to candidates for the ABIM Research Pathway. Those interested in the ABIM pathway should apply using the unique code 1737140C2
Along with the ERAS residency application in ERAS, applicants should submit a brief letter of interest via this Qualtrics survey no later than October 15. This letter should describe the applicant’s subspecialty area of interest, potential research focus, and how they would envision the fit at UVA.
The program will notify applicants if they are invited to interview for the ABIM Research Pathway. Typically, several extended interview days are offered for each specialty, during which applicants could interview for the core program in the morning and the subspecialty in the afternoon. Interview days will be tailored to each trainee’s unique interests.
Trainees in the ABIM Research Pathway program are guaranteed support for their clinical training years and three years of research training. During their research years, trainees are encouraged to seek outside funding to facilitate their transition to independent researchers.
For further information about the ABIM Research Pathway, please read more at the ABIM website.
Applying internally to the PSTP
Applicants matching into the ABIM Research Pathway are automatically admitted to the PSTP.
Categorical residents and fellows also have the opportunity to apply to the PSTP once they have been matched to UVA. Applications include a statement of interest and a CV detailing past research experience. Internal applications will be solicited during the summer of each incoming fellowship/residency class.
