Ob/Gyn Residency Program at the University of Virginia

Welcome!

The University of Virginia Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is dedicated to training compassionate, skilled, and thoughtful obstetrician–gynecologists. Our four-year program provides rigorous clinical training in a supportive, collegial environment that values evidence-based care, professionalism, and resident well-being. Twenty residents train at UVA Health, a nationally recognized academic medical center and Level I trauma center that serves as the leading tertiary referral hospital for Central Virginia. UVA’s Level IV NICU is the region’s most advanced neonatal intensive care unit and serves as a quaternary referral center for northwestern, southern, and central Virginia. Our patient population is diverse and provides residents with extensive exposure to both routine and highly complex obstetric and gynecologic care. In 2025, the department performed 2,415 and 7,059. This breadth and acuity of clinical experience ensure residents develop strong clinical judgment and surgical skills.

Our residency curriculum provides comprehensive training in general obstetrics and gynecology as well as all major subspecialty areas, including Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal–Fetal Medicine, Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Complex Family Planning, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Midlife Health. The department offers two ACGME-accredited fellowships in Gynecologic Oncology and Maternal–Fetal Medicine, further enriching the academic and clinical training environment. Trainees teach and work closely with medical students from our renowned UVA School of Medicine. Graduates of our program are well prepared for a wide range of career paths, including academic medicine, subspecialty fellowship training, and private practice.

Located in Charlottesville, Virginia, and surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the University of Virginia offers an exceptional setting for residency training—combining the resources of a major academic medical center with a strong sense of community and an outstanding quality of life.
