The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the University of Virginia is a dynamic, comprehensive training program with the paramount goal of answering the needs of an aging population by training skilled, compassionate and inquisitive fellows.

Program Aims: Our program builds upon fellows’ pre-existing knowledge and skills by challenging them to apply this knowledge through the lens of geriatric care. Fellows will develop a holistic, person-centered approach to care of the aged patient. This approach is multi-faceted and includes, but is not limited to, considerations in pathophysiology of aging, multi-morbidity, geriatric syndromes and social determinants of health. An integral part of this education involves learning from and teaching members of interdisciplinary teams comprised of nurse practitioners, pharmacists and nurses.

The care of older adults has long been disadvantaged by health care systems poorly attuned to their unique needs. Our program challenges fellows to think critically about the role of geriatricians within community care models and national health systems so that they can effectively navigate challenges and be an advocate for change. Not only will fellows develop into thoughtful clinical geriatricians, they will also have opportunities to explore ways to become leaders in geriatric medicine. Opportunities for geriatric leadership include: pursuing a certified medical directorship (CMD), medical education, or quality improvement research.
