Hand Fellowship

This one-year fellowship in hand surgery provides a balanced teaching, research and clinical experience. Board eligibility in plastic, orthopedic, or general surgery is required. An excellent microsurgery laboratory is available for training and research projects. Responsibilities include patient evaluation, treatment plan development, acute and reconstructive surgery, and postoperative care. A wide spectrum of clinical problems are treated and include congenital anomalies, rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries, acute trauma, post-trauma reconstruction, and microsurgery. Original research is encouraged and supported. Full-time research staff members will assist the fellow in the research projects. The fellow instructs medical students and residents and is responsible for hand conferences. All activities are conducted at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center.

Applicants must submit:

  1. The Universal Hand Application
  2. An original medical school transcript
  3. An original dean’s letter specifying date of graduation
  4. A copy of your curriculum vita
  5. Three letters of recommendation: One of the three letters must be provided by the program director at your most recent institution.  Letters of recommendation must arrive to our program sealed as applicants must waive the right to view the contents of the letters.

Application deadline is November 15, 2015.  The successful applicant will begin the fellowship August 1, 2017.

Interviews will be held in Charlottesville in January and February 2016.  Exact dates to be announced by end of Summer 2015. A pre-interview reception will be held the night before the interview. Additional information may be obtained by contacting Freda McClung at fm3s@virginia.edu.
