A Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia!  In addition to excellent clinical services, including inpatient adult psychiatry, outpatient child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry, and outpatient psychotherapy, our department is integrated into a number of other Medical Center departments, including the Cancer Center, Neurology, and Family Medicine.  We have also expanded our services to more rural, underserved areas of Virginia through Telepsychiatry.

Our department serves as a clinical training site for University of Virginia medical students, more than 40 general psychiatry residents and subspecialty fellows, and psychology fellows.  We take great pride in the educational balance of pharmacological, neurostimulatory, and psychotherapeutic approaches to our patients’ needs.  Our excellent faculty have a variety of clinical and academic interests, giving our trainees a broad range of education and experience.  In recent years, we have integrated a Global Health Track into resident training, developed a transcranial magnetic stimulation clinic, and made great efforts to personalize our trainees’ schedules to help develop their interests and future careers.

Additionally, we have been joined by talented and nationally renowned researchers, and continue to generate new knowledge for the treatment of psychiatric and addictive disorders through clinical research.

Whether you are visiting our site to find a clinician, or learn about our training programs or research efforts, I welcome you and thank you for your interest in our department.”
