Division of Surgical Sciences
About
The main mission of the Division of Surgical Sciences (DOSS) is to foster the success of team-based research in basic, clinical, and translational surgical sciences. DOSS provides a platform that captures the enthusiasm of small ideas and a comfortable home for surgeon-scientists to participate and grow. To facilitate the success of junior investigators, a mentoring system is implemented in DOSS that nurtures the transition from early-career development award (K08/K99/F32) to independent research funding (R01/U01), and to the establishment of team-based program project grant (PPG). Infrastructure is built within DOSS that encourages sharing of ideas and resources for an efficient transition from basic and translational research to therapeutic development and commercialization.
The Division of Surgical Sciences is committed to creating a nourishing environment for investigators of all levels. The Division follows these guiding principles: Excellence in Research, Resource Sharing, Mentoring for Success, Finance and Accountability, and Outreach for Growth.
A positive research environment, built on a foundation of collaboration, mentorship, and mutual respect is vital to ensuring the long-term success of surgical research. The DOSS encourages resource-sharing and incentivizes teamwork to eliminate silos and foster an environment where researchers can stay, build positive relationships, and grow to their fullest potential.
We welcome diverse perspectives within the surgical team, as well as those from across the School of Medicine and other UVA Institutes. Cross-functional research collaboration facilitates problem solving and complementary approaches for deeper understanding of research topics. Our outreach initiatives include seminars, joint lab meetings, small-group chalkboard discussions, retreats and research conferences, and regular online communications to make information as accessible as possible.
By investing in the success of our researchers at all levels, we accomplish our primary goal of excellence in research in the areas of organ transplantation and protection, oncology and immunity, exercise physiology and stress response, nano-drug delivery and targeted therapy, and stem cell biology and precision medicine. We create an infrastructure that connects basic/translational research to clinical outcome health care, which leads to greater advancement in therapeutic development and application of emerging technologies in patient care.
