Application Process

Overview

At the University of Virginia, we participate in the Thoracic Surgery Residency match, coordinated through the NRMP. We have three (3) positions available annually. There are two (2) cardiothoracic track positions and one (1) general thoracic track position. It should be noted that the cardiothoracic and general thoracic track positions have different match numbers. One of the two cardiothoracic positions is consistently filled by our I-6 resident annually. Intermittently, the other cardiothoracic position is filled by a Joint 4-3 resident. Each year, the number of positions available in the Traditional (Independent) Residency Match will be posted. Questions about the available positions can be confirmed by contacting our Residency Coordinator, Breanna Rose.

Integrated (I-6) Thoracic Surgery Residency Program

Integrated (I-6) Thoracic Surgery Residency applicants will be considered based on their individual ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and their motivation and preparedness for education in cardiothoracic surgery.

One, two or possibly three interview dates are held in winter each year. Following the interview process, the faculty will determine the rank order, after which the final ranking is submitted to the NRMP in anticipation of the March match.

Traditional (Independent) Thoracic Surgery Residency Program

Traditional (Independent) Thoracic Surgery Residency applicants will be considered based on their individual ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and their motivation and preparedness for education in cardiothoracic surgery. Applicants must be in the fourth (or higher) postgraduate year of an ACGME-approved General Surgery residency. A select number of applicants will be invited to interview at the University.

One or two interview dates in late winter/early spring each year depending on the number of open positions. Following the interview process, the faculty will determine the rank order, after which the final ranking is submitted to the NRMP in anticipation of the June match.

Joint (4-3) Thoracic Surgery Residency Program

The University of Virginia supports a Joint (4-3) Thoracic Surgery Residency program, to which current UVA General Surgery residents may apply, typically in the PGY3 year.
