Affiliated Research Initiatives
In addition to its primary research programs and translational research teams, UVACCC is affilated with multiple specialized cancer research initiatives across the University. Each includes Cancer Center faculty among its members and leadership, and leads its field in interdisicplinary research focused on areas including sub-cellular cancer biology, treatment of rare blood cancers, focused ultrasound combination therapies, and development of new interventions for cancer prevention and behavioral health:
- The Center for Systems Analysis of Stress-Adapted Cancer Organelles (SASCO) brings together experts in cancer and systems biology, genetically engineered cancer models, and clinical practice to study the cellular adaption to oncogenic stress that allows tumors to initiate and progress.
- The Translational Orphan Blood Cancer Initiative pursues new treatments for blood cancers so rare they are designated “orphan” diseases that have historically received limited research scrutiny and funding.
- The Focused Ultrasound Immuno-Oncology (FUSION) Center conducts research to improve the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapy by combining it with noninvasive focused ultrasound.
- The Center for Behavioral Health and Technology studies use of digital technologies to deliver behavioral health interventions that improve outcomes and for patients, survivors, and caregivers.
- The Community Cancer Control and Obesity Research Center focuses on the development, implementation, and sustainability of behavioral interventions targeting rural communities’ cancer-control priorities.
- The Center for Nicotine and Tobacco Research (CeNTR) aims to reduce tobacco-related disparities through the development and dissemination of sustainable community-based tobacco prevention and cessation interventions.
